Before coming to NewSpring, I had no clue what leadership was. I thought it was just some catch phrase used by CEOs and people higher up in organizations. I didn't think I had the need for leadership, nor did I ever have to practice any since I wasn't in a position of prominence. Over the past four years, since being a part of NewSpring, my view on leadership has completely changed! I have experienced first hand what leadership actually is, have been challenged to grow in the area of leadership and, coincidentally enough, my position now involves leading five great designers.
Recently, our Pastor has been talking specifically about the idea of "It's Not About Me". This particular phrase has a lot to do with leadership because being a great leader isn't done with selfish motives…it's done with selfless intentions.
This leadership mantra has not only inspired me to be a better leader at work, but has also challenged me to be a better leader at home.
I'm beginning to realize that while being a great leader in the office is important, being a great leader at home is most important. I am called to serve my wife and lead her well. I can't say "It's Not About Me" when lately, it has been all about me. Sometimes you lose focus and you're more concerned about what the Lord is doing in your own life, what's your next step, and where is He leading me to next. I forget to seek what is next in our life, what is our next step, and where is He leading us?
Leadership starts at home when I truly start living with the mindset of "It's Not About Me". Ultimately, I want to finish this life well. I want to be a great boss, an encouraging friend, a wise father and husband worth following.
